Globetom and Yes4Youth changing lives by creating new IT jobs


Globetom, a locally based international IT company, recently appointed five young black women as part of the Youth Employment service Yes4Youth, a programme which helps young unemployed people gain work experience, hopefully leading to new job creation. In line with Globetom’s commitment to upskilling locally with world best practice capabilities in the Information Technology sector, the company has further committed to providing work experience for seven other young South Africans, who have been placed in companies recruiting for these IT skills. The aim of Yes4Youth is to provide a first chance at work for young South Africans who battle to find jobs before having had the opportunity to gain experience and skills in the workplace. The placement is for twelve months, providing candidates ample time to acquire skills and related work experience. Globetom hopes to appoint at least two candidates permanently at the end of the twelve months.


The five new Globetom candidates who started on 17 August were immediately enrolled into online courses via the Udemy website, and have all completed and excelled in Linux exams. While Covid-19 posed restrictions in terms of social distancing, we were able to overcome these through online training and remote coaching. The first six weeks of training included Linux, Linux Shell Scripting, OracleSQL, MySQL for beginners, Software Testing, Agile Fundamentals, Jira Crash Course and Foundations of Agile Software Testing.  The next phase will involve training on XML, Business Skill and Customer Services – preparing the candidates for their first assignments within Globetom. These skills are in high demand in the Information Technology sector, and an excellent foundation from which to further any career, which is strongly acknowledged by the incumbents:

As from 1 October, the candidates have been integrated on-site on a scheduled basis twice a week, enabling social integration with the team. They have been allocated to existing Globetom teams in line with their individual aspirations, interests and potential.


While Globetom has always invested in local talent, the Yes4Youth programme provides a practical outcomes-driven process which is a win-win for both the business involved and the candidates. Even though businesses can gain points for their B-BBEE scorecard by participating on the programme, they are more importantly able to at the same time contribute to the national goal of youth job creation, which is so vital to the country’s future.
